What do you do when you’re not pole dancing (work/school/hobbies)?
I work in Sponsorship and Brand Activation for a financial institution. I think of it as event planning with a marketing twist. Otherwise, I spend most of my time cooking and hanging out with friends and family, which generally consists of copious amounts of food (thank goodness for pole).
How did you first discover pole dancing?
Through Groupon with a friend.
Do you have any previous dance, fitness or sports experience?
I regularly go to the gym to run or lift weights and I practice yoga on occasion. I wish I had more dance experience though!
What made you feel pole dancing could be for you and decide to try it?
My friend and I were looking for something that would take us out of our comfort zone. After considering multiple options we decided that pole dancing seemed the most fun and challenging.
LK: How did you come to be a member at Brass Vixens?
Adrienne: Through the Groupon voucher then over time became a devotee.
What were your first impressions?
The teachers and community were welcoming and supportive. My friend and I were a little nervous as we had no dance background and were not sure of what to expect but due to atmosphere, we quickly relaxed and got into the swing of things, literally!
What keeps you committed to pole dancing?
Pole dancing continuously challenges me both physically and mentally. There are so many tricks and moves that not only need strength but often a little courage and belief in your skills. As pole dancing continues to evolve, I know that pole and I will have a lifetime love affair!
What do you feel is a crucial element for a successful class experience?
The teachers and knowing what your own body is capable of. While you can continuously push yourself, having an instructor who can break down and talk through different moves is vital. Pole often relies on strength as well as placement, knowing where and how to place your limbs will keep you safe!
What has been an exciting moment for you on your pole journey?
Each time I successfully execute a new move or new choreo. I think that’s why I love it so much. It’s constantly challenging and exciting!
Do you have any pole goals you’re working towards?
Deadlifting into my Ayesha. It seems an impossible goal, haha!
How has pole dancing and taking classes at Brass Vixens affected the rest of your life and sense of self?
As I progressed along each level I noticed my body changing. I have never had a stronger upper body or core in my life. This new-found strength was also a serious confidence booster. The dancing, in general, has also helped me feel more secure in my own skin and less self-conscious. In addition, BV has given me the opportunity to meet some truly empowered and lovely people. They turn any crappy day into a better one 🙂
What has surprised you the most?
The community! Brass Vixens has created a supportive, female empowered and warm community. I expected my experience to be like going to the gym; everyone does their own thing and doesn’t really socialize. However, the women I have met at BV are not only smart, kind, funny and encouraging but come from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
