What do you do when you’re not pole dancing?
Mostly eating lots of cake, watching YouTube or Netflix with my dog.

How did you first discover pole dancing?
I don’t think it ever occurred to me that pole dancing was a way of fitness until I met a friend of a friend who is a long-time Brass Vixen member.

Do you have any previous dance, fitness or sports experience?
I was probably the most potatoey potato I knew back before I started pole. Rolling around in bed was my full time hobby.

What made you feel pole dancing could be for you and decide to try it?
I think I was just very taken and inspired by all the girls I watched online who pole dance. The way they move, the confidence they exude, and the strength they all had. They were all very unlike me, and at that time when I first started pole, I was at a point in my life desperate for change. I saw pole as a very positive avenue that would help give me some of the things I lacked. And it really did do that.

How did you come to be a member at Brass Vixens?
I’ve been friends with a long-term Brass Vixen member for a while at that point and she’s amazing at pole so it was no question that I would give the same studio a try.

What were your first impressions?
I was very surprised! To be honest, I signed up for my first class/month at pole thinking that I’d probably never go back. I never took dance before, and never had or expressed interest in much physical activity before either. But it was SO much fun. I ended up staying for more classes that day. I felt amazing, and happy. I needed more!

What keeps you committed to pole dancing?
How great it makes me feel and the determination to become as graceful and strong as all my pole idols.

What do you feel is a crucial element for a successful class experience?
An open mind and to not be so hard on yourself.

What has been an exciting moment for you on your pole journey?
TROUPE. It was scary as hell – probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever done! I’ve never considered myself bold enough to dance, let alone pole dance in front of a crowd of strangers half naked during a time I didn’t love my body so much. But it got me way out of my comfort zone, was totally exhilarating, and I am so proud I had the courage to do it.

Do you have any pole goals you’re working towards?
Doing troupe again *laughs*. Competing one day, however, would be the ultimate milestone.

How has pole dancing and taking classes at Brass Vixens affected the rest of your life and sense of self?
It’s encouraged me to say “yes” more to trying new things and overall, I feel more comfortable in my own skin.

What has surprised you the most?
Probably how much I enjoy pole and how much better I want to be at it.

What are your favourite classes and why?
SpinPole for all the beautiful shapes you make while spinning in the air, and FlexyVixens because I need it after all these pole classes!

What are your top 3 reasons to attend classes at Brass Vixens?
For it’s positive community, an amazing workout each time, and a really fun way of getting out of your comfort zone.
